Breathing and Health
Have you ever noticed how when you have a shock or are fearful your breathing changes?
We all breathe continuously of course or we would not be alive. We can last without food for weeks, without water for days but not without breathing for longer than a matter of minutes and yet we pay very little attention to our breathing.
Andrew Weil MD (author of 8 Weeks to Optimal Health) states that :"conscious breathing is the most important thing we can do for our health, regardless of exercise and diet".
If you are experiencing poor health then one of the most immediate benefits and improvements you can give yourself is to work with your breathing. As you read this notice how you are breathing. Are you taking in a full round breath that fills your lungs and slightly pushes out your abdomen, or are you upper chest breathing?
The body needs to be fully oxegenated to work effectively in carrying out all functions. If the breath is restricted in any way then it cannot work as well. Good posture, relaxed and full breathing unrestricted by tight clothing is what you need to aim for. Go outside and stand in the fresh air, gently breathing in a full breath and releasing it fully. notice how your breathing changes throughout the day depending on what you are doing. Exercise is great, especially brisk walking as it is safe you can do it anywhere for free, it requires no special kit and automatically increases your breathing and heart rate so that blood full of nutrients and oxygen is pumped round the body. it improves circulation allowing all those little nooks and crannies to benefit from a flush through.
Transformational Breathwork, conscious or Healing Breathwork is a very dynamic way of breathing but should only be undertaken with a breathwok Practitioner. When the body is fully oxygenated during a typical breathwork session allsorts of emotions, release and healing can take place. All the trapped energy from fear, hurt, resentment etc. that we may have been holding onto for years can be released.
Whilst we all breathe all the time as years go by we learn bad habits, as stress (fear) comes up we alter our breathing pattern and if this goes on over a long period of time can stay with that pattern. If you work in an office sitting down all day then your breathing will be restricted.Breathwork sessions are very dynamic and use a circular breath method that is completely unsuitable for daily life but is great for shifting old patterns of behaviour and releasing old emotions that may have become trapped within the body. However, there are other patterns you can try and I have included two methods on my site that you may find helpful.
The first is a "Breathing" DVD (universal viewing) that gives you some interesting exercises to try and you will find your breathing improving and relaxing if you work with them.
